Miles of sandy beaches, Atlantic Ocean surf, quiet sound side waters, historical sites, and a family oriented atmosphere draws people every year. Our beach house is located in Kill Devil Hills, the virtually unknown town between Kitty Hawk and Nags Head at milepost 9 between the highways. It’s just 2 short blocks to the ocean access and within walking distance to many excellent restaurants, beach shops, and convenience stores (just in case you forgot to bring something). Driving distance is only one mile to Harris Teeter, and Lowe’s and nine miles to Wal-Mart to the north and seven miles to outlet shopping to the south. Cape Hatteras National Seashore with the two lighthouses, Bodie and Hatteras, Pea Island National Wildlife Preserve, and the ferry to Ocracoke Island are all a fun easy day trip away. Learn about the graveyard of the Atlantic and the heroic officers from the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station. The Wright Brother’s National Park is an interesting place to visit, only a few miles from our house, you will be transported back in time to 1903, the time of the first flight. The Wright Brother’s Monument is visible from the upper front deck of our house. Just across the sound is Roanoke Island, home of Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and the Lost Colony the first settlers to the New World. During the summer the story of The Lost Colony is depicted each evening in an outdoor theater setting. Junior Ranger programs are available at each of the National Park sites. Jockeys Ridge State Park in Nags Head looks like a gigantic sand dune. Children and adults alike enjoy climbing and tumbling in the sand, flying kites, and following animal tracks. The really adventurous can even try hang gliding from the big dune. Water sports such as boogie boarding, kayaking, windsurfing, and parasailing are enjoyed by those of all ages as is sunbathing and building sand castles. A round of golf at the Dare County course is a pleasant way to spend a day or take the kids out to one of the many miniature golf courses.
